11-Year-old Daisy is alone at Brightwood Hall and is worried about her mother's disappearance. Her worry grows when a strange man arrives who wants Brightwood all to himself. Despite her fear, Daisy and her situation will resonate with readers. Daisy seeks the help of a ghost of a girl named Frank, who is linked to her home by a feeling of responsibility to protect Brightwood. Tania Unsworth cleverly created Frank as both a figment of Daisy's imagination and a metaphor for Daisy's mental function and character progress. Daisy is only aware of what the ghost girl Frank is aware of, but she drives Daisy to confront the truth about her situation. Daisy gradually comes to terms with the fact that Brightwood is a place built on unresolved sadness as she confronts her worries and fights back against the guy who wants Brightwood. The book's careful handling of sensitive subject matter is an exchange for its clear and straightforward finish. Daisy is never described beyond her black hair, which adds to the mystery of the text, leaving readers more curious. Brightwood is a fast-paced book of adventure and mystery, that captures readers to continue reading page after page.
